This era is characterized by greater market fragmentation.

These investments have undergone a profound transformation over the last few decades. During this time, investment no longer flows unidirectionally, but rather bidirectionally. This trend originated in the early 1990s, when large Spanish companies began their expansion by deploying their capital in strategic Latin American sectors: primarily banking, energy, and telecommunications. This laid the foundation for a presence that endures and continues to grow.

Meanwhile, in Latin America, multilatinas emerged, driving the international diversification of their businesses and investments. In this strategy, Spain quickly positioned itself as the natural gateway, offering a unique combination of key factors, including legal certainty, a predictable regulatory framework aligned with European standards, and a deep linguistic and cultural affinity that minimizes setup and transition costs. This investment presence demonstrates that Latin America has ceased to be merely a net recipient of capital and has become an active source of investment in the Spanish economy, which leverages Spain as a strategic bridge for expansion into European markets.

Spain’s role as a natural gateway and strategic bridge to European markets is essential for understanding the workings of Latin American investment in Europe.

Spain does not merely serve as a final destination for Latin American investments, but as a true hub and center for logistical, financial, and legal operations.

Latin American companies use their presence in Spanish cities to familiarize themselves with the strict regulations of the European single market, establish corporate networks, and subsequently expand their subsidiaries and investments into European markets in stages. This connecting function allows Latin American capital to penetrate highly competitive and regulatory economies with lower barriers to entry, benefiting from trade and legal agreements, monetary stability, and the connectivity infrastructure that Spain offers within the eurozone architecture.

From the European Union’s perspective, this investment dynamic takes on a geopolitical dimension that connects with its strategic autonomy in a fragmented international context, marked by the global reconfiguration of supply chains and the transition to more sustainable and digitalized economies, in which Europe needs reliable strategic partners.

Latin America meets these needs, possessing essential raw materials and resources, and a dynamic human capital that complements the needs of European businesses.

Spain not only acts as a strategic bridge but also as the ideal political translator within EU institutions, elevating Latin American priorities and fostering deep trade partnership agreements such as those reached with Mercosur, Mexico, and Chile, which seek to move beyond the extractive model, promoting balanced trade and complementary investments that incorporate greater added value.

Maintaining and strengthening this strategic centrality not only preserves the achievements made by Spain, but also ensures a solid and competitive platform that reflects a maturing of the business fabric on both sides of the Atlantic.

To illustrate bidirectional investments, we used data from the Foreign Investment Registry corresponding to the stock of non-ETVE (Foreign Securities Holding Companies) foreign direct investment as of December 2024.

Adding together the 19 Ibero-American countries, the stocks in 2024 are:

Spain → Latin America: €194,179 M (29.6% of the total Spanish stock abroad, which amounts to €656,961 M).

Latin America → Spain: €56,360 M (8.8% of the total stock received by Spain, which amounts to €640,221 M).

The relationship is clearly asymmetrical: for every euro of Ibero-American productive investment in Spain, there are approximately 3.4 euros of Spanish investment in the region.

Spanish investment in Latin America is concentrated in Mexico (35.7%), Brazil (23.9%), and Argentina (13.5%): these three countries account for 73.2% of total Spanish investment. Adding Chile, Colombia, Uruguay, and Peru, these seven main destinations represent 92.5%. The remaining 12 countries contribute only 7.5% of the regional investment.
