Quando consider\u00e1vamos que a pandemia tinha confirmado todo o diagn\u00f3stico de um \u00abmundo VUCA\u00bb em que vivemos (vol\u00e1til, incerto, complexo e amb\u00edguo), come\u00e7\u00e1mos a ouvir que o VUCA poder\u00e1 estar a ficar ultrapassado, que j\u00e1 n\u00e3o consegue traduzir com exatid\u00e3o a recente revolu\u00e7\u00e3o que virou o mundo ao contr\u00e1rio, e que talvez j\u00e1 n\u00e3o acarrete a ca\u00f3tica e enorme carga de sentimentos em rela\u00e7\u00e3o \u00e0 nova normalidade que se vai impondo. Temos agora o que muitos come\u00e7aram a designar por \u00abmundo BANI\u00bb.<\/p>\n

As quatro letras do acr\u00f3nimo t\u00eam origem na l\u00edngua inglesa: Brittle <\/em>(Fr\u00e1gil), Anxious <\/em>(Ansioso), Non-linear <\/em>(N\u00e3o linear) e Incomprehensible <\/em>(Incompreens\u00edvel). Damos as boas-vindas ao contexto BANI a quem tenha ficado preocupado por n\u00e3o conhecer este termo e por considerar n\u00e3o estar devidamente atualizado. No nosso caso, quando, numa confer\u00eancia, ouvimos esta express\u00e3o pela primeira vez, fic\u00e1mos na d\u00favida sobre se ter\u00edamos percebido bem ou se alguma coisa nos teria escapado, pois, em vez de BANI, a defini\u00e7\u00e3o para este contexto complexo deveria ser VUCA.<\/p>\n

Muitos dir\u00e3o que BANI \u00e9 um grau mais acentuado de VUCA, um upgrade<\/em>, reflexo de uma transforma\u00e7\u00e3o que j\u00e1 era r\u00e1pida, mas que, devido \u00e0 pandemia, se tem vindo a acelerar e a intensificar. Outros dir\u00e3o que BANI \u00e9 s\u00f3 o lado mais obscuro e ca\u00f3tico do mundo VUCA, ou ainda que um termo \u00e9 o sucessor do outro, dado que, no mundo atual, as certezas e as classifica\u00e7\u00f5es s\u00e3o cada vez mais ef\u00e9meras. O facto \u00e9 que esta simples discuss\u00e3o nos mostra que j\u00e1 nada \u00e9 facilmente classific\u00e1vel nem rotul\u00e1vel, independentemente do ponto de vista. No entanto, muito mais do que os acr\u00f3nimos, o que importa \u00e9 a reflex\u00e3o em torno dos mesmos, e em que medida nos afetam.<\/p>\n

Para avaliarmos melhor o contexto em que atualmente estamos inseridos, \u00e9 essencial voltar ao conceito VUCA, e perceber que este se vinha a tornar numa analogia quase perfeita do tempo que estamos a viver.<\/p>\n

Com mudan\u00e7as instant\u00e2neas, os acontecimentos s\u00e3o inesperados e vol\u00e1teis<\/strong>, sendo dif\u00edcil determinar causas e efeitos. Para dar apenas um exemplo, a r\u00e1dio demorou quase 40 anos para atingir a audi\u00eancia de 50 milh\u00f5es de pessoas; para chegar ao mesmo n\u00famero, a televis\u00e3o levou 13 anos, e a Internet, quatro. O contexto \u00e9, portanto, cada vez mais ef\u00e9mero e veloz.<\/p>\n

Devido ao volume elevado de informa\u00e7\u00e3o, tornou-se mais dif\u00edcil tomar decis\u00f5es. Referimo-nos a outra componente VUCA: a incerteza<\/strong>. Atendendo a que a antecipa\u00e7\u00e3o \u00e9 uma atitude obrigat\u00f3ria nos dias de hoje, coloca-se a quest\u00e3o de como nos poderemos antecipar aos factos, face a tantas transforma\u00e7\u00f5es. Simultaneamente, h\u00e1 uma outra componente que torna esta situa\u00e7\u00e3o mais complexa: muitas vezes, as experi\u00eancias passadas n\u00e3o se aplicam ao momento presente no que toca a ajudar na decis\u00e3o do rumo a tomar, ou seja, n\u00e3o podemos contar com a previsibilidade.<\/p>\n

Devido \u00e0 volatilidade e \u00e0 incerteza do contexto, a complexidade<\/strong> \u00e9 ainda maior. A repercuss\u00e3o de um determinado facto ou de um problema \u00e9 muito mais r\u00e1pida, e em diferentes graus que necessitam de ser devidamente analisados, o que representa um fator adicional de dificuldade de escolha do caminho mais adequado.<\/p>\n

Por fim, temos a ambiguidade<\/strong>. As realidades diferentes misturam-se, j\u00e1 n\u00e3o existindo leituras semelhantes feitas por duas pessoas diferentes. A dicotomia, as avalia\u00e7\u00f5es simplificadas do contexto e a padroniza\u00e7\u00e3o de comportamentos j\u00e1 n\u00e3o explicam o mundo nem nos ajudam a compreend\u00ea-lo.<\/p>\n

Tudo isto \u00e9 o VUCA. Tendo sido criado h\u00e1 j\u00e1 algumas d\u00e9cadas, este termo ganhou ainda mais sentido a partir dos anos 2000, e, com o avan\u00e7o da tecnologia, ainda com mais for\u00e7a. Com o desafio que trouxe \u00e0s organiza\u00e7\u00f5es, os paradigmas do VUCA foram assimilados pelos executivos e pelas escolas de neg\u00f3cios. A apropria\u00e7\u00e3o do termo e dos conceitos a ele associados ajudava as empresas a situarem-se num ambiente cada vez mais incerto, ajudando a tra\u00e7ar estrat\u00e9gias mais \u00e1geis, a formatar modelos de neg\u00f3cio, a compreender a concorr\u00eancia e os stakeholders<\/em>. Em 2008, com a crise financeira mundial, que teve in\u00edcio com a fal\u00eancia do Lehman Brothers, o conceito ganhou ainda mais relev\u00e2ncia no mundo dos neg\u00f3cios para a tomada de decis\u00f5es num contexto desestabilizador.<\/p>\n

O conceito VUCA parecia ter-se tornado numa b\u00fassola \u00fatil num mundo cada vez mais dif\u00edcil de compreender, mas a pandemia e a maior crise sanit\u00e1ria em d\u00e9cadas voltaram a baralhar tudo, e potenciaram uma s\u00e9rie de sentimentos desestabilizadores nas pessoas. Cheg\u00e1mos, assim, ao conceito BANI.<\/p>\n

Tal como ocorreu com o VUCA, o termo j\u00e1 tinha sido cunhado muito antes do que imaginar\u00edamos. A autoria deste termo \u00e9 atribu\u00edda ao antrop\u00f3logo, autor e \u00abfuturologista\u00bb norte-americano Jamais Cascio, que o apresentou num evento no Institute For The Future (IFTF), em Palo Alto, na Calif\u00f3rnia, em 2018. O insight <\/em>ocorreu dois anos antes da pandemia, mas tornou-se mais atual, e ganhou uma nova for\u00e7a na sequ\u00eancia desta.<\/p>\n

Cascio tem realizado palestras e Ted Talks sobre o tema do meio ambiente, que \u00e9 uma preocupa\u00e7\u00e3o cada vez maior das empresas conscientes. Em 2009, publicou o livro Hacking The Earth, Understanding The Consequences of Geoengineering. <\/em>No mesmo ano, foi selecionado pela revista Foreign Policy<\/em> como um dos Top 100 Global Thinkers<\/em>.<\/p>\n

O primeiro artigo que escreveu sobre o mundo BANI, \u00abFacing the Age of the Chaos\u00bb, <\/em>foi lan\u00e7ado em abril de 2020 no seu Blog que det\u00e9m na plataforma Medium. Cascio resume a transforma\u00e7\u00e3o que mudou a hist\u00f3ria da humanidade, e mostra que \u00e9 preciso ir al\u00e9m do conceito VUCA para tentar entend\u00ea-la: \u00abTrata-se de situa\u00e7\u00f5es em que as condi\u00e7\u00f5es n\u00e3o s\u00e3o apenas inst\u00e1veis, s\u00e3o ca\u00f3ticas, e nas quais os resultados s\u00e3o n\u00e3o apenas dif\u00edceis de prever, s\u00e3o totalmente imprevis\u00edveis. A partir das provoca\u00e7\u00f5es trazidas por este antrop\u00f3logo, podemos refletir melhor sobre estas carater\u00edsticas da \u00abnova normalidade BANI\u00bb:<\/p>\n

Fr\u00e1gil <\/strong>(Brittle<\/em>).<\/strong> Decorre dos esfor\u00e7os para maximizar a efici\u00eancia, para extrair de um sistema o m\u00e1ximo valor no que se refere ao dinheiro, \u00e0 energia, \u00e0 alimenta\u00e7\u00e3o e ao trabalho. Viver num mundo interligado faz que fragilidades que antes estavam restritas a lugares e a grupos espec\u00edficos se repercutam em efeito cascata por todo o planeta. Esta situa\u00e7\u00e3o de fragilidade poder\u00e1 refletir-se na inseguran\u00e7a dos empregos, das empresas que correm o risco de desaparecer, e nas transforma\u00e7\u00f5es no drive<\/em> do mercado.<\/p>\n

Ansioso <\/strong>(Anxious<\/em>). As incertezas (mundo VUCA) atualmente s\u00e3o tantas que geram enorme ansiedade, bem como a permanente sensa\u00e7\u00e3o de impot\u00eancia. Todos passaram a sentir um pouco na pele a \u00abdoen\u00e7a do s\u00e9culo XXI\u00bb, com medo do que possa acontecer ou correr mal, independentemente do que fa\u00e7am. Um mundo ansioso \u00e9 aquele no qual carregamos no bot\u00e3o \u00abF5\u00bb do teclado a todo o momento para atualizar as not\u00edcias e descobrir o pr\u00f3ximo facto chocante. \u00c9 esta caracter\u00edstica de ansiedade que tamb\u00e9m encontramos no comportamento representado por outro acr\u00f3nimo: o FOMO, que traduz a express\u00e3o em ingl\u00eas \u00abfear of missing out<\/em>\u00bb, ou seja, o medo de n\u00e3o saber o que est\u00e1 a acontecer, de estar a perder alguma coisa. Um exemplo \u00e9 a necessidade constante de estar atualizado nas redes sociais em tempo real, o dia todo. A ansiedade reflete a ang\u00fastia e o stress <\/em>dos tempos atuais, acentuados pela inseguran\u00e7a em rela\u00e7\u00e3o \u00e0 sa\u00fade e aos riscos de cont\u00e1gio da COVID-19.<\/p>\n

N\u00e3o linear <\/strong>(Non-linear<\/em>). O que era complexo, por sua vez, tornou-se n\u00e3o linear, sem um \u00fanico sentido, levando a m\u00faltiplos destinos. Os sistemas de causas e consequ\u00eancias passaram a ser desconectados ou desproporcionais. Isto faz-nos lembrar imediatamente a pandemia. Era imposs\u00edvel ter previsto como o surgimento de um v\u00edrus num determinado ponto da \u00c1sia se iria repercutir em todos os acontecimentos tr\u00e1gicos a que temos assistido em diferentes partes do mundo. O conceito de \u00abachatar a curva\u00bb dos casos de COVID-19 \u00e9 implicitamente uma guerra contra a n\u00e3o linearidade.<\/p>\n

Incompreens\u00edvel<\/strong> (Incomprehensible<\/em>). A tentativa de encontrar todas as respostas j\u00e1 n\u00e3o faz tanto sentido. A an\u00e1lise obsessiva de dados pode causar sobrecarga que impede a compreens\u00e3o ou torna dif\u00edcil distinguir entre o ru\u00eddo e um sinal. Neste ponto, o conceito BANI reflete alguma resigna\u00e7\u00e3o. Segundo este conceito, como muitas vezes \u00e9 dif\u00edcil tentar traduzir ou entender o contexto, ser\u00e1 mais proveitoso consider\u00e1-lo indecifr\u00e1vel, e seguir em frente, procurando encontrar o pr\u00f3prio rumo.<\/p>\n

Numa an\u00e1lise simplista do BANI, poder\u00e1 parecer que o mundo est\u00e1 sem sa\u00edda. A hist\u00f3ria, no entanto, ensinou-nos a ver mais al\u00e9m. Imagine a sensa\u00e7\u00e3o de total instabilidade de passar de cultura dicot\u00f3mica para um mundo VUCA, incorporando os requisitos deste. Numa perspetiva hist\u00f3rica, podemos considerar que foi um tempo curto. Em poucos anos, muitas startups <\/em>tornaram-se gigantes do mercado, especialmente em tecnologia. Durante a pandemia, os setores maioritariamente offline <\/em>(sa\u00fade e educa\u00e7\u00e3o, por exemplo) passaram a online <\/em>em escassos meses.<\/p>\n

No entanto, independentemente desta discuss\u00e3o, \u00e9 fundamental fazer a reflex\u00e3o sobre as oportunidades e as aprendizagens que podemos extrair destes novos sinais que surgem na nova normalidade.<\/p>\n

Tendo em conta o diagn\u00f3stico de tantos sentimentos negativos e desafiadores (como a ansiedade, a fragilidade e a impot\u00eancia), t\u00eam sido descobertos alguns caminhos alternativos, especialmente pelas lideran\u00e7as de diversos setores da sociedade.<\/p>\n

Entre os \u00abant\u00eddotos\u00bb, est\u00e3o a empatia e a preocupa\u00e7\u00e3o com o todo, com o social, ou seja, a consci\u00eancia de que muitas das incertezas e preocupa\u00e7\u00f5es do mundo BANI n\u00e3o s\u00e3o apenas individuais. Uma resposta a este mundo incompreens\u00edvel, fr\u00e1gil, ansioso e n\u00e3o linear \u00e9 a nova vis\u00e3o de prop\u00f3sito das empresas voltadas para todos os stakeholders, e que est\u00e1 presente em iniciativas como a do Business Roundtable, lan\u00e7ada por v\u00e1rios CEO de grandes empresas norte-americanas em 2019.<\/p>\n

Em 2021, o fundador e presidente executivo do F\u00f3rum de Davos, Klaus Schwab, real\u00e7ou que era necess\u00e1ria uma \u00abGrande Redefini\u00e7\u00e3o\u00bb do capitalismo, referindo que \u00abtemos de passar de um mundo baseado apenas em objetivos materiais para um mundo muito mais consciente do bem-estar das pessoas\u00bb. Este exerc\u00edcio transformador tem de ser orientado por lideran\u00e7as genu\u00ednas e conscientes. Luiza Trajano, uma das principais refer\u00eancias no setor empresarial brasileiro e no tema de desenvolvimento sustent\u00e1vel, costuma referir: \u00abA empresa \u00e9 voltada para o que o CEO quer. Se ele n\u00e3o concordar com uma ideia, n\u00e3o adianta querer que outros concordem com o que ele pr\u00f3prio n\u00e3o aceitou\u00bb.<\/p>\n

O tempo dir\u00e1 se o conceito BANI ser\u00e1 passageiro ou n\u00e3o, mas j\u00e1 percebemos que h\u00e1 cada vez mais mudan\u00e7as radicais em curso. Num artigo recente sobre o novo acr\u00f3nimo, o fil\u00f3sofo e historiador brasileiro Leandro Karnal questionou a necessidade de \u00abetiquetas definidoras do mundo\u00bb. \u00abOs conceitos em cascata mudam alguma coisa?\u00bb, questionou.<\/p>\n

Independentemente de classifica\u00e7\u00f5es, temos o \u00abdesafio de enfrentar os desafios\u00bb. Neste sentido, necessitamos de resili\u00eancia, de modo a conseguirmos encarar este novo mundo BANI, que realmente parece ser mais fr\u00e1gil. No caso da ansiedade, provavelmente conseguiremos seguir em frente com um maior exerc\u00edcio de empatia. A falta de linearidade pode ser enfrentada com doses maiores de flexibilidade e antecipa\u00e7\u00e3o, e a transpar\u00eancia e a sinceridade s\u00e3o a solu\u00e7\u00e3o para lidar com o incompreens\u00edvel. Todos os caminhos est\u00e3o em aberto para estas oportunidades, e n\u00e3o h\u00e1 respostas prontas. Uma conclus\u00e3o \u00e9 certa: o momento n\u00e3o poderia ser mais oportuno para ocorrerem transforma\u00e7\u00f5es.<\/p>\n
