LLYC IDEAS, the consulting firm’s Center for Leadership through Knowledge, has just launched European Union – Latin America: New Times, New Alliances, the 40th issue of UNO magazine. The publication is dedicated to the Spanish presidency of the Council of the EU and focuses on the need to take advantage of this moment to relaunch the strong economic, but also cultural and emotional ties between Europe and Latin America. More than 20 experts reflect on the new possibilities for cooperation between the two regions.
The new issue of UNO includes an interview by José Antonio Llorente, Founding Partner and Chairman of LLYC (BME:LLYC), with Moisés Naim, an analyst of international economics and politics. In it, Naim laments that “the relationship between Latin America and Europe is more in speeches, wishes and harangues than in the daily practices of decision-makers”. He believes that Latin America could be the Saudi Arabia of the new era because of its natural resources and highlights the effect that greater unity in the region could have: “The potential of an integrated Latin America is enormous, significant, and is the reason for great hopes that have so far been unfulfilled. Perhaps with new leaders there will be more possibilities of thinking of a Latin America that knows how to make alliances, first internally, in the region itself, and then on an international scale,” Naim points out.
“We have dedicated this issue of UNO to the links between Latin America and the European Union because, for LLYC, these are more than just a good idea: they are at the heart of our business project. In Spain, beyond eventual political changes, two transversal facts shared by almost the entire Spanish population will remain: Europeanism and the perception that there is a special relationship with Latin America. Now is the time to assert both ideas,” says José Antonio Llorente, Founding Partner and President of LLYC, in the foreword to the publication.
The Minister of Foreign Affairs, European Union and Cooperation of the Spanish Government, José Manuel Albares, states in his article that “Spain’s pro-European commitment is especially important to boost the EU”. He also points out the main axes of the Spanish presidency of the EU: “The first will be the promotion of a reindustrialization of Europe, seeking greater competitiveness of our companies and ensuring that European industry is consolidated at the forefront of the major trends of technological change. Another important line will be the commitment to European unity in the face of international challenges. It must lead us to engage even more with our priority partners and those with whom we share values, such as Latin America.”
In addition to Albares, the panel of experts who have contributed to this 40th issue of UNO includes Andres Allamand, Ibero-American Secretary General; Javier Niño Pérez, Deputy Management Director for The Americas in the European External Action Service (EEAS); Raquel García Llorente, Researcher at the Royal Institute Elcano; María Ángela Holguín, Former Minister of Foreign Affairs of Colombia; Ramón Jáuregui, President of the Euroamerica Foundation; Cristina Manzano; Director of esglobal and IE Insights; Helder Z. Barbalho, Governor of the State of Pará (Brazil); Daniel F. Runde, Senior Vice President of the Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS); Enrique Goñi, President of the Hermes Institute; Erika Mouynes, Former Minister of Foreign Affairs of Panama; and Marina Artusa, Clarín’s Correspondent in Spain.
Also participating in this issue are the heads of several companies: Alicia Richard, General Manager of Afiniti for Spain and Portugal; Adolfo Vinatea, CEO of Krealo; John Rutherford, Global Head of IR at BBVA; Andreu Vilamitjana, General Manager of CISCO Spain; João Nunes, Managing Director of LATAM Strategic Markets at Page Group; Yaneth Giha, Executive Director of FIFARMA; and Leandro Conti, Senior Director of Communications and Marketing-External Relations at Hotmart.
On behalf of LLYC, Juan Carlos Gozzer, Partner and CEO of the Americas at LLYC. In addition, Paloma Baena, Senior Director of European Affairs and Next Generation EU, and Pablo García Berdoy, Principal Advisor of European Affairs co-sign an article.
