With the inauguration of Keiko Fujimori and the installation of the first bicameral Congress in 34 years, Peru begins a new political era. In her first Address to the Nation, the president presented an agenda focused on security, investment, employment, infrastructure, state reform, and social protection.
The Executive Branch will need to implement these measures in a Congress with divided power. The opposition controls the Chamber of Deputies with 74 votes compared to 56 for the ruling party, while the Senate is divided into two blocks of 30 seats and is presided over by Fuerza Popular. This composition will force the Government to build consensus to move forward with its main initiatives.
For the private sector, it will be key to monitor the Government’s execution capacity, the fiscal sustainability of the announcements, and the evolution of the legislative agenda.
