Challenge.

In the last three years, over 2,000 cases of discrimination against the LGBTIQ+ community have been recorded in Mexico. Many individuals are compelled to leave their homes to seek a place where they can live authentically due to lack of support from their families. This often leads to significant obstacles in achieving a dignified quality of life.

Casa Frida, a shelter for the LGBTIQ+ community in Mexico, tasked us with the challenge of bringing to light the resilience, bravery, and determination of those who have had to leave their homes in Mexico and across Latin America.

The organization aimed to spark a conversation on an issue that impacts not just the community but the entire country: violence against the LGBTIQ+ community.

Impact.

‘Doors of Hope’ addresses the violence faced by the LGBTIQ+ community using art to reinterpret their experiences as an innovative way to raise collective awareness and draw attention to critical issues.

Through the ‘Doors of Hope’ project, over 180 members of the LGBTIQ+ community at Casa Frida have had access to more safe spaces, thanks to the funds raised.

“We’ve done amazing work hand in hand with the LLYC Foundation to raise awareness and shed light on the reality of the persecution and criminalization faced by LGBTIQ+ individuals in the context of the migration crisis.”

Director of Refugio Casa Frida

Solution.

We connected seven members of the LGBTIQ+ community who found refuge at Casa Frida with various national and international artists to reinterpret their stories, using doors as canvases—symbolizing the ones closed to them at home and the ones opened at Casa Frida. This transformation turned each narrative into a work of art, shedding light on the harsh reality of violence against the LGBTIQ+ community in Mexico. The doors, transformed through this artistic endeavor, were exhibited at the renowned Hilario Galguera Gallery to raise funds to create more safe spaces.
