Colombia 2026-2030: keys to the second presidential round and the challenges of the new Government
The second presidential round opened a new political stage for Colombia. With a historic turnout of over 63%, and a difference of just 0.9 percentage points, Abelardo de la Espriella was elected president in one of the tightest races in recent years.
The result reflects a highly mobilized and divided country, in which the majority of the electorate opted for a change of direction. De la Espriella’s victory cannot be explained solely by political alliances or last-minute endorsements, but rather by his campaign’s ability to connect with the discontent toward the outgoing Government and with a citizen demand for order, security, and authority.
In this context, at LLYC we present the report “Presidential Elections Second Round 2026”, an analysis that seeks to understand how the victory took shape, which political forces are best positioned, and what the main challenges will be during the transition and the first months of the new Government.
The document analyzes the regional behavior of the vote, the first reactions of political, business, and international actors, the potential Government team, and the role that Vice President José Manuel Restrepo could play as a technical figure to send signals of economic stability.
One of the main challenges will lie in governability. De la Espriella arrives at the Casa de Nariño with a narrow lead over Cepeda; furthermore, he will begin his Government without his own majorities in Congress. This will force the new composition of the Executive to build agreements with traditional parties, independent sectors, and caucuses to advance his agenda.
Consult the full report and learn the keys to understanding the government transition, legislative viability, and the scenarios that will mark the beginning of the new political cycle in Colombia.
